Hagar - Jewish-Arab Education for Equality

'Hagar' Association was founded by a group of Jewish and Arab activists from Be'er-Sheva who share a vision of a just society where Jews and Arabs can live together in cooperation, trust and understanding. This group recognized that education is crucial for realizing a lasting peace, and thus 'Hagar' Association started to create a bilingual, multicultural education program that includes an educational institute as well as a community outreach center. The 'Hagar' school is the newest integrated Jewish-Arab school in Israel and the only one in the Negev. It was founded in cooperation with the Hand-in-Hand Association, which has been implementing its model of bilingual education for the past nine years in three schools in different parts of Israel. 'Hagar' Association has adopted this model, while adapting it to address the uniqueness of the Negev communities. Both the Israeli Ministry of Education and the Be'er-Sheva Municipality support the project and are helping to fund it. The school expands on a yearly basis and is aimed to become a full K-12 school in the future.
