American Friends of Hand in Hand

Through its growing network of bilingual and multicultural public schools for Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel, Hand in Hand is educating the next generation, who will create a more democratic, secure, and peaceful future. Hand in Hand is unique in that it provides integrated education with an equal number of Jews and Arabs in each class and with an Arab and Jewish co-teacher in each classroom. This is in stark contrast to the segregated education that exists in the Arab and Jewish schools of Israel. Hand in Hand schools allow our families and the community at large to go beyond the negative stereotypes so common in segregated societies and learn to discover the common humanity in each of us. With a focus on academic excellence, these award-winning schools have created pioneering curriculum which fosters mutual understanding as well as pride in one? heritage. Since 1998, despite the ongoing violence, Hand in Hand schools have grown steadily and created a viable new form of partnership, dialogue, and coexistence between Jews and Arabs in Israel. There are now four Hand in Hand schools withclose to 1,000children enrolled, and plans for additional schools in other communities throughout Israel. The schools are fully accredited and recognized by the Israeli Ministry of Education, which funds part of the schools?overall budget. The organization? far-reaching impact extends to government leadership, communities, and educators across Israel and around the world. Hand in Hand is an extraordinary program that is already making a difference, using education as a catalyst for change. It is a wonderful confirmation of Israelis, both Arab and Jew, working together to create a shared future.
