Ma’ase Center’s Directors published a special statement regarding Jewish-Arab relations During “Protective Edge”

Dear Friends and Partners,

Ma’ase Center is, above all else, a home for all groups comprising Israeli society and has been so since its very inception. The fact that our staff and program participants come from different backgrounds and sectors is a unique and significant fact among social organizations and society in general. Our multiculturalism and variety is a great advantage and makes us what we are – but at the same time presents a significant challenge.

Alongside our shared values that arise out of a sincere desire to build a better, moral society based on social solidarity that cuts across all boundaries and sectors, we also (and good that it is so) represent a wide range of opinions about the reality in which we live. The fighting in Gaza is difficult, complex, painful and hurtful. The encounter with the bloodshed and violence generates a sense of insecurity, fear, and at times – second thoughts about the future of our joint existence in the State of Israel. These past weeks present an immense challenge to us all: to maintain our opinions and beliefs without overshadowing the shared values by which we operate. The ability to empathize and feel the “other’s” pain despite differences of opinion is our true strength as people, and as an organization.

Yet, we must not be distracted – once the battle is over, Israeli society will be required to address the wounds the conflict has created. Then Ma’ase will have to show the way forward and sound a clear, sane voice in favor of living together in Israel, focusing on the common issues versus the differences, emphasizing closeness and working against hatred.

Last week we – as an organization – took a pause. Out of our belief in open discourse, in showing sensitivity and tolerance and strengthening one another in our ability to move forward together, even when it is difficult and threatening, we stopped all activities to convene in Haifa for a day of discourse and reflection. Some 50 Ma’ase employees participated in the meeting which was difficult and emotional. We shared our grief and fears and discussed the conflict, at the same time emphasizing and supporting the common values.

We believe that holding such a meeting at this point in time is an important indication of our commitment to our shared path. We decided on a number of steps we plan to take as an organization in the immediate future and in the long term, in order to advance our joint mission and will continue this discussion next week.
